Welcome to our amazing chess club!
Every week, we have special chess tournaments. They are so much fun! But to make sure everyone can play, think, and enjoy the game, we need some simple rules.
These rules help us become chess champions – not just in playing, but in being kind and fair too!
Why Do We Have Chess Rules?
Chess is a game that needs quiet thinking and respect.
When everyone follows the rules:
- ✅ You can concentrate on your moves
- ✅ Everyone feels happy and safe
- ✅ We all learn and improve together
- ✅ The club runs smoothly for everyone
Think of rules like the pieces on a chess board – they all work together to make the game great!
Our 5 Golden Rules
1. Be Respectful 🎯
- Use a calm, kind voice
- Listen when others are speaking
- Never say mean things about someone's moves
- Everyone is learning!
2. Show Good Sportsmanship 🤝
- Shake hands (or say "good game") before and after your match
- If you lose, say: "I learned something new today!"
- Always say "Well played!" to your opponent at the end
- Winning is fun, but being kind is more important!
3. Stay Focused and Calm 🧠
- Stay in your seat during games and lessons
- Don't talk to other tables
- Need help? Put your hand up!
- Wait for the teacher to come to you
4. Look After Our Chess Sets 🪑
- Handle the pieces carefully
- Put all pieces back in the box after playing
- No food or drinks on the chess tables
- The chess sets are for everyone to enjoy!
5. Include Everyone 🌟
- Help players who are new to chess
- Be patient with beginners
- Never laugh at mistakes
- No bullying – ever!
- We are a team, and everyone belongs here!
How Our Weekly Chess Tournament Works
Every week, we have a 20-minute chess tournament. Here's how you earn points:
Tournament Points System
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| You lose | 1 point |
| Draw (tie) | 2 points |
| Win by capturing pieces* | 3 points |
| Win by checkmate! 👑 | 4 points |
*Win by capturing pieces means you have taken pieces worth 3 points more than your opponent.
The Quiet Point – Very Important! 🔇
At the start of each tournament, you get 1 Quiet Point.
This point helps everyone stay focused and calm during games.
What happens if you talk during the tournament?
- You lose your Quiet Point
- That's it! Simple!
What CAN you say during the tournament?
- "Check!"
- "Checkmate!"
- "I adjust" (when fixing a piece)
For everything else: 🙋 Put your hand up!
Wait for the teacher to come to your table. This includes:
- Questions about rules
- Needing help
- Any other problems
The Lesson Point – For Learning Time! 📚
Before the tournament, we have lesson time. This is when we learn new chess ideas, tactics, and tricks!
At the start of each lesson, you get 1 Lesson Point.
You keep your Lesson Point if you:
- ✅ Listen when the teacher is speaking
- ✅ Stay in your seat
- ✅ Put your hand up to ask questions
- ✅ Follow instructions quickly
- ✅ Help keep the class calm and focused
You lose your Lesson Point if you:
- ❌ Talk while the teacher is explaining
- ❌ Disturb other students
- ❌ Leave your seat without permission
- ❌ Ignore the teacher's instructions
- ❌ Make noise or distract the group
Why is the Lesson Point important?
- It helps everyone learn better
- It shows you are ready to be a chess champion
- It makes our club a happy place for all
Note: Lesson Points and Quiet Points are separate. You can earn both each week!

Some behaviours are not okay in our chess club. These are more serious than just losing a point:
